What Is Total Cost of Ownership?
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) refers to the complete cost to source, import, store, fulfill, and deliver a product to the end customer. TCO is the landed cost to the warehouse (see how to calculate landed cost) plus fees from the warehouse to the final consumer. This includes:
- Unit Cost – Product price from your supplier
- Inspections – Quality control and testing
- Total Freight – Ocean, air, or ground shipping costs
- Duties & Taxes – Based on HTS classification and applicable tariffs
- Warehousing – Storage costs at port, warehouse, or 3PL center
- 3PL Fulfillment – Pick, pack, and shipping charges
- Other Fees – Customs brokerage, packaging, insurance, returns
By calculating these together, you get your total cost of ownership per unit—and can determine your target selling price to meet your desired margin.
How Importers Are Using TCO
As global costs fluctuate, importers are rethinking how they price and source products. Knowing your TCO will help to adjust strategy to keep margins healthy. Companies are:
- Running a TCO Cost Breakdown to understand per-unit cost by order
- Running a Supplier Comparison that includes freight and duty impact
- Evaluating 3PL options based on all-in fulfillment and storage costs
