What are Incoterms? “Incoterms” is short for international commercial terms, and they define the standard for assigning obligations to liabilities of parties involved in international transactions. The International Chamber of Commerce has published the terms since 1936, with the most recent Incoterms® 2022 rules published on January 1, 2020. Everyone engaged in overseas commerce should have an understanding of Incoterms.
Common Incoterms include Ex Works (EXW) and Free on Board (FOB), but what do these terms mean for buyers and sellers?
Incoterms are crucial because they help avoid misunderstandings and disputes by clearly delineating obligations such as transportation, insurance, and customs duties. Incoterms define liability and Incoterms also impact cost. Referring to an Incoterms Reference Chart is important for all parties involved in international trade as it provides a quick and accurate guide to these terms, ensuring that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities, thereby facilitating smoother and more efficient global trade operations.
